We had a great number of people turn up for our Churchyard BioBlitz at the end of August, and amazingly many came back at 7.30 on a Sunday morning to see how many moths we’d trapped overnight. Trails were followed, cake was consumed, crafts were created and, most importantly, we were able to add to our knowledge of the ecology of the churchyard.
We recorded over 100 species, including 26 species of moth and 4 species of bat – the event took place on International Bat Night, and our night time bat detecting and moth trap gave a few nocturnal dog walkers a shock! The new data that we gathered will help us better manage the churchyard going forward.
We are very grateful to everyone who came over the weekend, and especially to Mary and Tony Atkinson and to Dave Groves for giving up their time to help us. The whole churchyard is due to be cut this month, so if you’re interested in helping us look after this important resource in the heart of the village, keep an eye out for raking dates.
