Grass cutting
Cormac arrived in June to cut the spring meadow sections of the churchyard, and we have done as much as we can under the restrictions to deal with the cut and tidy things up. The good news is that from this month we will be able to resume the project, though with some changes to how we work – we will update more on this in due course.
Hedgehogs
We sadly found a young hedgehog that had fallen into one of the church drainage gullies and was unable to escape. We have responded by adding wooden ramps to provide an exit route. We also have water bowls around the churchyard for the hedgehogs, so please leave them in place if you spot them - some of these things may look random but they are there with good reason!
Yellow rattle
Last year we collected yellow rattle seed from Kit Hill to add to the churchyard. It is semi-parasitic on grasses so is a good plant to include to improve conditions for wildflowers. We were very pleased to see it has established itself and should now spread through the summer meadow. If you find it in the churchyard, give the seed heads a shake and you’ll see why it has the name it does!
Coming up
The next cut has been postponed to the second week in September as there are still plenty of plants flowering and setting seed, and some birds, including the swallows, have had second broods and we don't want to take away their food source. One thing we don't want setting seed is the hogweed so we will be removing flowerheads before the end of the season. Cormac are also still cutting the path edges on a monthly basis and we are maintaining the mown areas.
