Late April saw the first cut of the churchyard this year, and while we still have to operate with some restrictions we had a decent number of rakers out to help remove the grass cuttings from the summer meadow on a lovely sunny Sunday morning (we normally rake on a Saturday but moved it this time as the church was booked for a wedding).
It didn’t take long to finish the work as the grass growth rate has been pretty slow due to the dry spell, so there wasn’t too much to rake up and barrow away.
The summer meadow will be left now until the autumn, although we will maintain the footpaths we’ve established through the long grass, and Cormac will be trimming the edges of the main paths through the churchyard each month.
The spring meadow will have its first cut in late June after the early species have finished flowering and setting seed. This is always a bigger undertaking so if you think you may like to come and help out we can always use an extra pair of hands. Keep an eye out for dates.
