One of our main aims when we started this project was to attract grasshoppers back to the silent churchyard (well, silent other than the rooks!). A few months ago the first chirrups were heard, and recently we enjoyed a full chorus. Here's one of the singers!
Over the summer we have been able to establish paths through the meadow areas, which have opened up access to the churchyard for visitors, as well as adding to the mosaic of habitats for wildlife. We were unable to do this previously due to a lack of equipment, but we now happily have access to a working petrol mower as well as a good old fashioned push-along – harder work but more in keeping with our ethos!
We have also been maintaining the areas around graves that we know are regularly visited. Cormac have also agreed to include the area with the recent memorials opposite the church porch in their monthly maintenance regime. If you need regular access to a memorial that is not currently accessible please let us know and we can include it in our cutting plan.
At the time of writing the next cut is imminent and will include the whole of the churchyard, so raking it will be quite an undertaking – please get in touch if you’d like to be added to our list of volunteers or just to be kept informed of events spcakeandrakers@gmail.com .
