03/2019
2018 was a promising first year for South Petherwin Cake and Rakers. We raked the grass after each cut by Cormac to improve conditions for wildflowers, we held a very well attended community meeting, we built a bug house (Bugingham Palace!) and we installed a variety of bird and bat boxes.
We have been busy behind the scenes over the last few months trying to find a way to implement a new grass cutting regime, which is central to our objectives. Our original plan was for the village to hold the funds allocated by Cornwall Council so we could manage the grass cutting of the churchyard directly. That has not been possible so another route was required.
Last month there was a very productive meeting with the Community Partnerships Officer at Cormac, which has given us a way forward. Cormac will continue to cut the grass, but will be following our management plan, and we will carry out the additional conservation activities as a voluntary group, working in partnership with Cormac. This will result in the establishment of a spring meadow and summer meadow, with path edges maintained on a monthly basis to improve access.
There will be four main cuts through the year with the first in April, and we need to build a good base of volunteers. No particular skills are required, just a willingness to give up a few hours to help improve the churchyard for wildlife and the village, while getting some exercise and meeting your neighbours! If you are interested in taking part or would like more information, please contact us either via our Facebook page (South Petherwin Cake and Rakers) or email spcakeandrakers@gmail.com.
